VolumeHooligan Privacy Policy

VolumeHooligan (“the Extension”) is a Chrome browser extension that boosts the audio volume of the tab you choose. This policy explains what data is handled, how it is used, and what is not collected.

Short version: VolumeHooligan works entirely on your device. It does not send browsing data, audio, or settings to any server we operate. There are no ads and no trackers.

1. Data we handle (locally only)

Volume preferences per site (optional “Site memory”): if enabled, the Extension stores the hostname of a site together with your last volume level in Chrome’s local storage on your device.
Settings: language, max boost cap, site-memory toggle, and animation preference — stored locally via chrome.storage.local.
Session state: temporary per-tab volume / mute state while boosting is active — stored in chrome.storage.session.
Tab audio (processing only): when you boost a tab, Chrome’s tabCapture API provides an audio stream that is processed locally with the Web Audio API (gain + soft limiting). Audio is not recorded, saved, or uploaded.
Active tab metadata: title and favicon may be shown in the popup UI so you know which tab is being controlled. This stays on your device.

2. Data we do not collect

No account, email, or personal profile
No analytics, advertising IDs, or crash beacons to our servers
No sale or sharing of user data with third parties
No remote code execution; the Extension only runs packaged scripts

3. Permissions (why they exist)

tabCapture / offscreen — capture and process tab audio for volume boosting
storage — save settings and optional site volume memory
activeTab / scripting — open the optional portable float panel on the page you are viewing, only after you click the extension

4. How data is stored and secured

All stored preferences remain in Chrome’s extension storage on your computer. Nothing is transmitted to a VolumeHooligan backend because none exists. Clearing the Extension’s data in Chrome settings, or uninstalling the Extension, removes stored preferences.

5. Children’s privacy

The Extension is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from children.

6. Changes to this policy

If our data practices change, we will update this page and the “Last updated” date. Material changes will also be reflected in the Chrome Web Store listing privacy disclosures.

7. Limited Use disclosure

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
